Social media is arguably the single most disruptive innovation in the history of industrialized civilization. It’s redefining how we engage with each other, how we do business, how we get our news, how we spend our free time and how we revolt against repressive regimes. It’s no wonder that people are terrified of it. And to that end, it’s not surprising that many educators find themselves in schools where social media is blocked -- and/or with draconian social media policies in place.

Enterprising educators are using Twitter in creative ways, to engage students inside and outside of class, to stay on top of education news, and keep in touch with peers and students. A recent post by Best Online Colleges enumerates 28 ways to use Twitter in class. They’ve asked me to repost, and I’m happy to share it.

You don’t have time to monitor Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Orkut, LinkedIn, wait, Orkut? Exactly. There are literally kabillions of social networks out there just screaming to get you in as a user. Sure, Twitter and Facebook are the big ones that you’ve already joined. But are they right for you? What about LinkedIn? Or the upstart (and newly redesigned) Google+?

The following infographic from business consultant Zintro does a decent job summarizing the numbers, pros and cons, and what makes each network different. While it is not exhaustive (where’s Pinterest?!), it’s helpful.

Twitter is used for many purposes including staying in touch with friends and promoting corporate identities. If you are new to the Twitter world or haven’t stayed on top of the network’s latest trends, then you may not be aware that Twitter chat sessions are available.
