Armies of hacked smart devices launch unprecedented DDoS attacks | #InternetOfThings #IoT #IoE #CyberSecurity | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Security researchers have been warning for years that poor security for internet of things devices could have serious consequences. We’re now seeing those warnings come true, with botnets made up of compromised IoT devices capable of launching distributed denial-of-service attacks of unprecedented scale.

Octave Klaba, the founder and CTO of French hosting firm OVH, sounded the alarm on Twitter last week when his company was hit with two concurrent DDoS attacks whose combined bandwidth reached almost 1 terabit per second. One of the two attacks peaked at 799Gbps alone, making it the largest ever reported.

According to Klaba, the attack targeted Minecraft servers hosted on OVH’s network, and the source of the junk traffic was a botnet made up of 145,607 hacked digital video recorders and IP cameras.

With the ability to generate traffic of 1Mbps to 30Mbps from every single Internet Protocol (IP) address, this botnet is able to launch DDoS attacks that exceed 1.5Tbps, Klaba warned.

Internet providers have built huge data systems to track every move you make online | #BigData #Privacy

Internet providers have built huge data systems to track every move you make online | #BigData #Privacy | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
Web users face an even greater threat to their privacy as large ISPs align themselves more closely with data brokers to track their customers, an advocacy group said.

Several large ISPs have either formed partnerships with, or acquired, data tracking and analytics firms in recent years, giving them a "vast storehouse of consumer data," according to a report Wednesday from the Center for Digital Democracy.

"ISPs have been on a shopping spree to help build their data-targeting system across devices and platforms," the report says. "Superfast computers analyze our information ... to decide in milliseconds whether to target us for marketing and more."

Through digital dossiers that merge all of this information, we can be bought and sold in an instant -- to financial marketers, fast-food companies, and health advertisers -- all without our knowledge."

ISPs are increasingly using programmatic advertising "fueled by powerful alliances among data, media, advertising and technology companies," the report says. The new advertising model "encompasses nearly all the device and formats we rely on -- including mobile, audio and video."

Some ISPs now have the ability to marry a customer's Web surfing history with his or her TV viewing habits and mobile app use to target advertising across devices, the report says.

Europe's high court says ISPs can hand over alleged pirate data

Europe's high court says ISPs can hand over alleged pirate data | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

The European Court of Justice says that Sweden's laws have no barriers in place that would preclude an ISP from sharing an alleged pirates' data with rightsholders.

Those on both sides of the argument have debated the legality of sharing IP addresses with copyright holders since 2009, when the so-called IPRED law went into effect in Sweden. The statute provides for ISPs to reveal a person's IP address whenever he or she is charged with pirating multimedia.

Under the law, a court must decide if an IP address should be released, and that can only happen if rightsholders head to court and argue their case.

OVH suffers 1.1Tbps DDoS attack | #CyberSecurity #CyberAttacks | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it

An internet hosting company has been the subject of a distributed denial of service attacks the likes of which the world has never seen.

Hosting company OVH has been subject to the biggest attack DDoS known to date, with peaks of over 1 Tbps of traffic.

Over the past week, the company has been subjected to an attack greater than the one suffered by Krebs on Security.

The attack led to company founder and CTO Octave Klaba tweeting, “last days, we got lot of huge DDoS. Here, the list of ‘bigger that 100Gbps' only. You can see the simultaneous DDoS are close to 1Tbps!”

Klaba also shared a screenshot of the multiple attacks on its infrastructure that when added together produced the 1Tbps directed at the company. The biggest single attack was documented at 799Gbps.

FBI pressures Internet providers to install surveillance software | ICT Security-Sécurité PC et Internet | Scoop.it
CNET has learned the FBI has developed custom 'port reader' software to intercept Internet metadata in real time. And, in some cases, it wants to force Internet providers to use the software. Read this article by Declan McCullagh on CNET News.
