Captivating Portraits Taken in a Small Indian Village Where Girls Rule the World - Feature Shoot | quest inspiration | Scoop.it
A few kilometers from the border of India, German photographer Karolin Klüppel discovered the tiny, isolated village of Mawlynnong where ‘girls rule the world’. Made up of only 92 dwellings in the East Khasi Hills, the town uniquely operates as a matrilinear society, each family’s lineage traced through the surname of the wife instead of …

How Silicon Valley’s Hippie Roots Led to Its Modern Elitism

"The idea of back-to-the-country didn't work. But I think something deeper didn't work, and it haunts us today, even as it underlies a lot of what we do. The notion that you can build a community around shared style is a deeply bohemian notion. It runs through all sorts of bohemian worlds. The notion that if you just get the right technology you can then build a unified community is a notion that drove a lot of the rural communal efforts. They thought by changing technological regimes; by going to 19th century technologies; by making their own butter; sewing their own clothes — they would be able to build a new kind of community. What they discovered was that if you don't do politics — explicitly, directly, through parties, through organizations — if you don't pay attention to and articulate what's going on with real material power, communities fail."

Jerónimo M.M.'s insight:

"So I argue that there's a fantasy that haunts the internet, and it's haunted it for at least a decade. And it's the idea that if we just get the tools right and communicate effectively, we will be able to be intimate with one another and build the kinds of communities that don't exist outside, in the rest of our lives. And I think that's a deep failure and a fantasy."

Jerónimo M.M.'s insight:

The first comment made me think "This 'we are one' stuff only ever works on paper or in those lazy lecture afternoons. A gift of the gab speaker does their thing in a hall somewhere for a fee and when the talk is up and everybody screeches their chair back, heads for the exit, fights to get out of car park before all the other jackasses and beat the evening traffic to throw some dead animal in the oven for dinner, the talk has worn off and its business as usual. "

There is a kernel of truth in it.  The question is: What to do now you know All Is One?

Cory Doctorow: Cheap Writing Tricks

Cory Doctorow: Cheap Writing Tricks | quest inspiration | Scoop.it

Plots are funny things. In the real world, stuff is always happening, but it’s not a plot. People live. People die. People are made glorious or miserable. Things eagerly awaited are realized, or hopes are cruelly dashed. Love is gained; love is lost. But all these things are not a plot – they lack the fundamental tidiness and orderliness that makes a story a story.

In fiction-land, stories have beginnings, middles and ends. They have dramatic tension, which rises to a climax towards the end of the story, and then roll on a while longer, into denouement. A plot is what you get when you draw a line around a set of circumstances and say, ‘‘These things are all part of one story, and they comprise its beginning, middle and end, and its arc from low tension to high. This moment here is the climax of this story.’’

That line is wholly arbitrary, of course – your personal life-story’s climax is merely a passing moment in someone else’s arc – but the really weird thing is that a story that lacks this arbitrariness feels arbitrary. A bunch of things that happen without any curation or pruning away of extraneous moments do not a story make, despite the fact that this is how the world actually works.

So plots are funny. Unless you enumerate a world that is patently false, it won’t ring true.
