The science behind meditation, and why it makes you feel better | Mindfulness and Meditation | Scoop.it
Meditation yields a surprising number of health benefits, including stress reduction, improved attention, better memory, and even increased creativity and feelings of compassion. But how can something as simple as focusing on a single object produce such dramatic results? Here’s what the growing body of scientific evidence is telling us about meditation and how it can change the way our brains function.

I love this as a reminder to staying mindful and living in the now.  It always amazes me how much time we spend (and waste) during our day thinking of the past or living in the future.

What can you do for 10 minutes each day to acknowledge the NOW?

Here are a few of my favorite daily rituals to living in the NOW...

1. Breathe

Taking a few minutes a day to stop and do some breathing techniques is a great way to shift your focus on the moment.  Counting to four on your inhale and extnding your exhale to the count of 5 keeps you in a place of NOW.

2. Tapping

One of my favorite yoga practices, Dahn Yoga, teaches the art of tapping.  I love to spend a few minutes everyday tapping pressure points on my chest, legs and abdomen.  Not only does it release a lot of stress and tension, it allows me to get in touch with my body.

3. Getting In Touch With Nature

Taking a walk beachside, sitting under an old tree and smelling the roses are all ways I've learned to appreciate spending time in the now. As I've gotten older, I've come to cherish my time with nature as "my time".  Its not time to lament the past or worry about the future.  It's just time to stop... and smell the roses.

4. Gratitude

Taking a few minutes out of your day to acknowledge the things in your life that you are grateful for not only helps you stay in the now but fills your mind in body with such positivity. Spend a few minutes a day creating a gratitude list.  I like to do mine before bed.
